Why Preparation Matters
Whether you’re getting dermal fillers, anti-wrinkle injections, microneedling, laser or chemical peel it is very important to prepare your skin beforehand in order to get the best results. Even though each treatment will have its own individual pre-treatment advice, taking a few days to prepare your skin for your appointment will have numerous benefits. This includes minimising any potential irritation or discomfort during your treatment, and enabling your skin to recover quickly.
Your treatment will be tailored to you by your practitioner and they will give you advice for your specific treatment. In the meantime, here are a few general tips to help prepare your skin in the run up to your appointment.
Keep Your Skin Well Hydrated
Well hydrated skin is better protected and more resilient before and after a treatment. In the days leading up to your appointment, apply a good quality moisturiser to your skin and also make sure to drink plenty of water to keep your body hydrated. The majority of preparation for skin will come from your topical skincare.
Even if your skin is feeling dry and flaky, inform your practitioner of your current skincare routine as they can advise on changes to be made in order to achieve the best results from your treatment.
Protect Your Skin From the Sun
Some treatments can make your skin more sensitive and cause irritation to sun-exposed areas. If your skin has recently become sunburnt it is usually best to leave a few days before having treatment. Apply a broad-spectrum SPF product as part of your normal skincare routine in the run up to your treatment. In addition, wear a hat and use shade when possible during peak hours to avoid excess sun exposure.
Avoid Harsh Skincare Products
Products that contain active ingredients in order to give your skin extra exfoliation such as retinol serums, prescription strength retinoids, chemical peels and physical scrubs can all make your skin sensitive. The length of time you are advised to stop using these types of products will depend on the treatment that you are having to prepare your skin for, in order for your skin to return to its normal state before the treatment is applied.
Attend Your Appointment With Clean Skin
Try to arrive at the clinic for your treatment with clean skin, free from makeup, heavy skin care products and fake tan. If however you arrive at the clinic with makeup on then the clinic staff will make sure it is removed before treatment.
Be Honest During Your Consultation
Your consultation with your practitioner is where you can discuss your medical history, any allergies that you have, your current skincare routine and any other relevant factors. Your practitioner can then use this information to determine whether a particular treatment is suitable for you or not. It is also your opportunity to ask any questions that you may have and to discuss the potential results of any treatment.
It is also important to reveal to your practitioner any current or past aesthetic treatments, whether relevant or not to your proposed treatment. Your treatment will be performed safely and to the best of the clinic’s ability if you inform them of your history.
Follow Your Practitioner’s Advice
As previously mentioned each treatment has different pre-treatment requirements. For example laser treatments require pre-treatment differently to some injectables and other skin resurfacing treatments. It is important to follow the advice given by your practitioner. If you have any doubts or concerns regarding your pre-treatment it is always best to call and clear any doubts prior to your appointment.
Don’t assume anything, if you are unsure prior to your treatment then ring the clinic and ask for further advice, to ensure that you are given the correct information prior to your treatment.
